There are two main kinds of belly fat: subcutaneous and visceral. Visceral fat lives deep in your abdomen and wraps itself around your organs. This fat is the more dangerous of the two. It acts like a gland, churning out damaging hormones such as cortisol, which makes you crave sugary, fatty foods. It also produces inflammatory proteins called cytokines that can sap your bone strength and raise your cholesterol level.
